According to the UVM Athletics Department, Senior Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) and junior Maurice Joseph (Montreal, Quebec) have been named co-captains of the 2008-09 University of Vermont men’s basketball team. Head coach Mike Lonergan made the announcement today.
“I was pleased to see that Mike and Maurice were voted co-captains by their teammates,” said Lonergan. “I am confident that they will do a great job leading our team on and off the court.”
A three-time America East all-conference selection, Trimboli enters his senior year as one of the top returning players in the league. He enters his final year with 1,496 career points, good for seventh all-time in Vermont history, and is fourth in career assists with 471. This marks the third straight season that Trimboli has been a captain after taking over midway through his sophomore season. Last year he was the only Catamount to play in and start all 31 games. Trimboli finished second on the team and third in the America East in scoring (17.9 ppg) and also led the Cats and was second in the league in assists (4.5 pg) last season.
“Mike has been one of our captains since halfway through his sophomore season. He is a tireless worker in practice and the guys have great respect for his dedication to our basketball program. I think Mike is going to have a fabulous senior year and I am very excited for him,” added Lonergan.
Joseph will make his Catamount debut this season as he sat out last year after transferring from Michigan State. The Montreal native appeared in 31 games for the Spartans as a sophomore in 2006-07, averaging 5.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per game, while connecting on 42-of-116 three-point field goal attempts. Joseph will look to fill in for three-year starter and captain Kyle Cieplicki, who graduated last season.
“Maurice has been a vocal leader since he arrived on campus. His energy and enthusiasm for the game and for life are infectious. It speaks volumes about what a fine young man he is that his teammates elected him as captain despite the fact that he has yet to play a game at UVM. Maurice is hungry to get back on the court and we are all looking forward to seeing him in a Catamounts uniform,” said Lonergan.
The Catamounts have a pair of home preseason contests this year against Concordia (Nov. 2) and Saint Michael’s (Nov. 8), before open the regular season by hosting George Mason on November 15.
