On February, 20, 2009, in response to the need for budget cuts, the University of Vermont athletic department chose to eliminate the varsity baseball and softball programs after the 2008-2009 academic year.
Each of the programs has been a loyal mainstay on baseball and softball scenes within the state, as well in department lore. Baseball was the first program started at the university and consistently has one of the highest amount of native Vermonters on its roster.

NEWARK, Del. – Senior Colin McIntosh (Milton, Mass.) poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the University of Vermont men’s basketball team to a 78-63 victory over Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center on Tuesday night. The Cats used a 23-4 run to break open a one-point game in the second half, as they improve to 2-2 overall on the year.
McIntosh hit 11-of-15 from the floor and scored 17 of his 25 in the second half in only 27 minutes of action. Junior Marqus Blakely (Metuchen, N.J.) would add his second straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Cats and senior Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) went for 19 points, seven boards and five assists.
“I thought that was a great win for us tonight. I feel that we have played well every game this year, unfortunately we have two heart-breaking losses in there but I thought our team has stayed confident,” said Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan. “The team knew we were going to challenge them with a tough schedule and I am glad they were rewarded tonight, especially Colin because he has been really good all year.”
