On February, 20, 2009, in response to the need for budget cuts, the University of Vermont athletic department chose to eliminate the varsity baseball and softball programs after the 2008-2009 academic year.
Each of the programs has been a loyal mainstay on baseball and softball scenes within the state, as well in department lore. Baseball was the first program started at the university and consistently has one of the highest amount of native Vermonters on its roster.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Four Catamounts reached double figures as the University of Vermont men’s basketball team held off Loyola (Md.) 64-62 on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gym. Back-to-back threes by seniors Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) and Colin McIntosh (Milton, Mass.) gave the Cats a 59-54 lead with 4:07 left as they would hold on to improve to 3-2 on the season.
“We are very happy to get away with a win today,” said Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan. “I thought it was the first game of the year we really did not play well. We have in every game, coming a long way since the exhibitions. Today we kind of went back to turning the ball over and it was really from our experienced players.”
After a strong start, the Catamount offense went cold with only one bucket over a span of 12:23 that ended with a lay-up by sophomore Evan Fjeld (Durham, N.C.) with 11:08 to go in the contest. The second half saw eight lead changes and a three by Anthony Winbush with 10:32 to go gave Loyola its first lead since 5-4 at 46-45.
