LOUISVILLE – Deseree Byrd scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help No. 9/No. 11 Louisville hold off Vermont, 67-59, in a gritty performance by the Catamounts at Freedom Hall on Sunday afternoon. With the win Louisville improves to 10-1 and runs its win streak to five, while the Catamounts have dropped three straight and fall to 5-5.
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead to start the game. UVM came back to cut the margin to three on a jumper by senior Sy Janousek (Chandler, Ariz.) at the 10:02 mark, but Louisville countered with a 13-4 run over eight minutes and was helped by nine turnovers by the Catamounts in that stretch to push its lead back to 10, 25-15, with just over two minutes left in the first half. The Cardinals would go on to take 27-18 lead at the break.
