On February, 20, 2009, in response to the need for budget cuts, the University of Vermont athletic department chose to eliminate the varsity baseball and softball programs after the 2008-2009 academic year.
Each of the programs has been a loyal mainstay on baseball and softball scenes within the state, as well in department lore. Baseball was the first program started at the university and consistently has one of the highest amount of native Vermonters on its roster.
In an article about the Vermont men's basketball loss to Binghamton, the Burlington Free Press didn't beat around the bush by titling the story, "Bearcats Dump UVM." How can you blame them. UVM is 1-9 in their last 10 overtime games. I'd say that's really 'getting dumped on.'
VESTAL, N.Y. — The University of Vermont men’s basketball team had its America East Conference opener spoiled with a 91-83 overtime defeat to Binghamton on Thursday night.
D.J. Rivera — a transfer from St. Joseph’s and the league’s leading scorer — piled up 29 points to help Binghamton defeat the Catamounts for the first time since January of 2006. Winners of six straight, the Bearcats improved to 10-4 and sit atop the America East standings at 3-0.
Vermont droped to 9-5 after losing in overtime for the third time this season.
“We’ve been fortunate to win a lot of games against Binghamton lately and escape with a lot of close wins, and tonight we couldn’t do that,” UVM coach Mike Lonergan said. “We got down too much. We shot the ball very, very poorly from 3-point range and were really weak the ball.
