Reinstatement of UVM Baseball and Softball

On February, 20, 2009, in response to the need for budget cuts, the University of Vermont athletic department chose to eliminate the varsity baseball and softball programs after the 2008-2009 academic year.

Each of the programs has been a loyal mainstay on baseball and softball scenes within the state, as well in department lore. Baseball was the first program started at the university and consistently has one of the highest amount of native Vermonters on its roster.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Anthony Raffa and Will Harris combined for 42 points to lead Albany to an 82-77 victory over the University of Vermont men’s basketball on Sunday afternoon at Patrick Gym. Senior Colin McIntosh (Milton, Mass.) led the Cats as he matched a career-high with 25, as they fall to 9-6 overall and 0-2 in America East action.

Albany, who has now won the last four straight over Vermont, improves to 10-6 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.

“It is a frustrating loss for us. I thought we fought back and we could have gotten a couple more stops, instead we fouled and turned the ball over and that was that,” said Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan. “I give Albany credit, they played harder than us today. They made plays when they had to and we just did not have enough. It really starts with the defensive end of the court. We have a few days to get better and we have to try to get a win at BU, but it’s not going to be easy.”
