On February, 20, 2009, in response to the need for budget cuts, the University of Vermont athletic department chose to eliminate the varsity baseball and softball programs after the 2008-2009 academic year.
Each of the programs has been a loyal mainstay on baseball and softball scenes within the state, as well in department lore. Baseball was the first program started at the university and consistently has one of the highest amount of native Vermonters on its roster.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior Maurice Joseph (Montreal, Quebec) scored a career-high 19 points and classmate Marqus Blakely (Metuchen, N.J.) added 17 points and 16 rebounds as the University of Vermont men’s basketball team cruised to a 76-42 victory over UMBC on Monday night at Patrick Gym. The Catamounts have now won three straight as they improve to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in America East action.
Joseph hit six three’s on the night and added four rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes off the bench. The 34-point margin of victory was the most for the Cats since they defeated Hartford 89-45 on January 2, 2005.
“It was a good win for us, I’m glad our guys stayed confident after the two-game losing streak, stuck together and got back to playing some good Vermont defense. It is nice to see Mojo and Joey continue to help us off the bench, their three-point shooting has really opened things up for us,” said Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan.
