The University of Vermont ski team competes at the Eastern Championships hosted by Colby College in Sugarloaf, Maine, this weekend. The alpine events will be held on Friday and Saturday at Sugarloaf Mountain while the Nordic events will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center.
THIS WEEKEND’S ALPINE SCHEDULE
Friday’s alpine events at Sugarloaf begin with first runs of the women’s giant slalom at 9:30 a.m. and first runs of the men’s giant slalom will follow. Second runs are set to start at 1:00 p.m. Saturday’s alpine events continue with first runs of the men’s slalom at 9:30 a.m. and first runs of the women’s slalom will follow. Second runs are set to start at 12:30 p.m.
THIS WEEKEND’S NORDIC SCHEDULE
Friday’s Nordic events at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center begin with the men’s 10k classic at 9:30 a.m. The women’s 5k classic is set for 11:00 a.m. The Nordic events continue on Saturday with the women’s 15k freestyle at 9:00 a.m. The men’s 20k freestyle will follow at 10:30 a.m.
MIDDLEBURY CARNIVAL RECAP
Vermont finished second as a team at the Middlebury Carnival with 866 points. Dartmouth edged out the Catamounts with 881.5 points to claim first place. Vermont freshmen David Donaldson and Meg Ryley both skied to first-place victories in the slalom at the Middlebury Snow Bowl. Freshman Franz Bernstein won his first collegiate race claiming the men’s 10k classic at the Rikert Touring Center. Bernstein edged out teammate Juergen Uhl by less than three seconds. Uhl finished second in the 10k classic. Senior Marsh Gooding added a second-place finish in the men’s giant slalom and senior Jilyne McDonald added a third place in the women’s slalom.
EISA RANKING LIST
After five carnivals on the EISA Circuit this season, David Donaldson ranks first in the men’s slalom and second in the men’s giant slalom with a total of six victories to lead the way for the Catamounts. Senior Juergen Uhl ranks first in the men’s classic with two first-place finishes and he is ninth in the freestyle. Freshman Franz Bernstein ranks second in the classic and sixth in the freestyle. Freshman Caitlin Patterson ranks second in the women’s freestyle and fourth in the classic. The women’s alpine team is led by freshman Meg Ryley, who ranks second in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom. Senior Jilyne McDonald is third in the slalom.

Seniors Marsh Gooding and Jilyne McDonald will serve as captains for the alpine team this season. Seniors Katrina Howe, Mary Stewart and Juergen Uhl will serve as captains for the Nordic team.
HEAD OF THE CLASS
The Vermont women's ski team posted a 3.57 grade point average as a team in the Fall of 2008, while the men's ski team posted a 3.43 grade point average.

Vermont competes at the 2009 NCAA Ski Championships hosted by Bates College on March 11-14.
