By record, Binghamton University should be the #5 seed in the upcoming America East mens basketball tournament. Instead, the Bearcats may not play at all.
Sources indicate the team, the major focus of a scathing 99 page report about inadequacies within their athletic department, may be forced to sit out this season's tournament, set for this weekend in Hartford.
It is not yet clear whether the potential penalty is coming from the University itself or SUNY's Central Administration.
A call to Binghamton's sports information office was not immediately returned. A spokesmen at SUNY Central said he would look into the situation.
The report, which took 4 months to complete, was ordered by SUNY chancellor Nancy Zimpher.
The America East is scheduled to release the tournament pairings today. By record, UAlbany would be part of a Thursday play-in-game, 8:30pm against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County at Hartford. Those pairings had not been released as of 4pm.
If Binghamton is excluded from the tournament, the Danes would move directly to the Saturday quarterfinals, where they would meet top-seeded Stony Brook in a 12pm start at the University of Hartford's Chase Family Pavillion.
