There will be an all northern final in the Vermont High School Basketball State Championship Saturday at UVM's Patrick Gymnasium. In a semi-final that pinned two north vs south match-ups, both northern teams stood their ground. In the first game, the fans at Patrick were treated to a nail-biter as Joe O'Shea put the Seahorses on his back in the fourth quarter helping them take a lead in the closing minutes to escape with a 51-46 victory. O'Shea scored a team high 20 points (17 in the second half) with help from teammates Jackson Grady (15 points), and Brendan Corriveau (14 points). In the second semi-final, we saw a more lopsided affair, as the Essex Hornets steamrolled the Brattleboro Colonels en route to a 59-39 victory. Demir Smajovic led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets. These results set up a showdown between Essex and Burlington who have faced off twice against each other this year. Burlington's only blemish came against the Hornets as the two split the season series. The rubber match will have much bigger implications as the winner will walk away with the 2009-2010 Vermont State Championship. The game will take place Saturday evening at 7 pm at UVM's Patrick Gymnasium. Photos from both semi-final games can be viewed below.
