The University of Vermont begins its post-Marqus Blakely era when the Catamounts face Siena in the opener on Saturday night at Times Union Center.
Blakely, a two-time America East Player of the Year, guided Vermont to the NCAA Tournament last season. All the 6-foot-5 forward did as a senior was lead the Catamounts in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks.
He was cut by the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers this preseason.
“We’re going to miss him so much,” said Vermont coach Mike Lonergan, entering his sixth season. “Even when you went on the road with Marqus, you knew you were going to be competitive no matter who you played. We don’t have that one superstar, and that really hurts. We’re really going to have to become a good defensive team and rebounding team.”
The Catamounts lost four starters from last year’s champion with 6-8 senior forward Evan Fjeld (10.7 ppg) the only returning starter. Another starter, guard Garvey Young, transferred to Quinnipiac.
“They’re very similar to us,” Siena coach Mitch Buonaguro said. “They lost a lot of good players … They lost a lot of talent. Now, they’re still good. I think they’re a little under the radar.”
