Players on the University of Vermont men’s basketball team took more swings at the opponent it has treated like a punching bag for years.
The Catamounts surged to a 72-51 victory over the University of Hartford before 2,711 fans at Patrick Gymnasium on Tuesday night, giving them 10 straight wins over the Hawks and 17 in the teams’ last 18 meetings.
Evan Fjeld tallied 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and Brendan Bald added 14 points and lock-down defense for a Vermont team that seized its third straight win and sole possession of second place in the America East Conference.
The Catamounts improved to 15-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference, knocking Hartford (7-13, 4-3) into the middle of the standings.
