FINAL SCORE: Vermont 73, Maine 57
ORONO, Maine – Behind 19 points from senior Evan Fjeld, the University of Vermont men's basketball team defeated Maine on the road on Wednesday night 73-57. The win is the 10th straight for the Catamounts who improve to 22-5 overall and 13-2 in America East action. The win also secures the regular season championship outright for the Cats and the top seed in the league tournament.
Vermont recorded new season-highs for field goal percentage (59.6 percent) and assists (22), while holding Maine to shoot only 30.4 percent in the second half. The win also secures an automatic bid to the NIT if the Catamounts do not advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Fjeld went 9-for-13 from the floor and added seven rebounds, four assists and four blocks, while sophomore Brendan Baldadded 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting and junior Matt Glass chipped in with 11. The loss was the fifth straight for the Black Bears, who fall to 14-12 overall and 8-6 in league play.
“I am very pleased with that win. I thought we did a great job getting the lead in the second half and were able to run some clock,” said Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan. “Any time on the road when you can get a win like that with what was at stake, I will take it. That was great and now we can enjoy our trip to Charleston.”
