In order to stay within reach of qualifying for the America East Conference tournament, players on the University of Vermont baseball team knew what they needed to do this weekend against Maine. OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1');
"We had to take three out of four," third baseman Kyle Massie said.
The Catamounts completed the task at Centennial Field, salvaging a doubleheader split with its rival Sunday afternoon. After shrugging off a 16-5 beating in the opener, UVM snatched a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
Coupled with Vermont's sweep of the Black Bears on Saturday, the split puts the Catamounts at 24-21 overall and keeps them in fourth place in the conference standings at 10-10.
They can lock up an America East playoff berth -- the top four teams qualify -- by winning two of four games next week at Hartford in the final regular-season series of the season. Three wins against the fifth-place Hawks (17-29 overall, 9-11 AE) will earn them the No. 3 seed.
