Vermont Falls To Harvard In Overtime In Men's Soccer

Final Score: Harvard 2, Vermont 1

BOSTON, Mass. -- A goal by Brian Grimm two minutes into overtime gave Harvard a 2-1 victory over Vermont in men's college soccer in Tuesday afternoon at Ohiri Field.

The game was the third in five days for the Catamounts (3-4-2), all away from home and all against strong New England region rivals. Vermont returns to Burlington to open America East play Saturday hosting New Hampshire.

Grimm?s goal completed a Crimson (5-2-0) comeback as for the fourth straight game UVM scored first but has only one win to go with three defeats. In all three losses, the Cats have opened the scoring in the first half.

"Once again we were too casual after going ahead," said Vermont coach Jesse Cormier. "We lost our concentration after halftime and seem to struggle when playing with a lead. That is not the time to make the mistakes we have been making. Harvard is a very good team and we should have known they would not quit."

"We have found out a lot about ourselves against a challenging schedule of non-conference games and we need to use this information to prepare for the very tough America East games that are ahead," Cormier added.

Tyler Hasman (Portland, Ore.) opened the scoring in the 15th minute created by a great effort by T.J. Gore (Macomb, Mich.). Gore made a long run through midfield and his low cross found the foot of a sliding Hasman who one-timed it by Harvard keeper Adam Hahn.

After the break the Harvard began to apply more pressure and saw a pair of its shots deflect high off the crossbar. The Crimson picked up the equalizer in the 69th minute when Matt Hoff converted a penalty kick. Making the play worse was that UVM goalie Tom Critz (Enfield, Conn.), who came in for starter Roger Scully (East Lyme, Conn.) at halftime, was sent off with a red card after taking down Michael Fucito in the box to draw the penalty kick. The Catamounts would play a man down the rest of the way.

Hoff made a nice play to set up the game-winner 2:03 into extra time as his cross from the right side found Grimm unmarked at the left post for an uncontested header.

Harvard outshot Vermont, 12-7, for the game with an 8-4 edge after halftime. Scully had UVM?s lone save in 68 minutes of time while Hahn went the route for Harvard and made four stops.

Vermont next plays UNH Saturday at 1:00pm at Centennial Field to open a two-game homestand. UVM also hosts Stony Brook Wednesday at .
