BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont men’s basketball team has announced that Joey Accaoui (Lincoln, R.I.) and Pat Bergmann (Burlington, Vt.) will join the program next season as members of the class of 2011. Head coach Mike Lonergan made the announcement today.
“Joey and Pat are very good additions to our recruiting class,” said Lonergan. “Joey will be our smallest player and Pat our tallest. We are very happy to have been able to get both of these student-athletes during the late signing period.”
The duo will join Evan Fjeld (Durham, N.C.) and Garrett Kissel (Springfield, Mass.) as newcomers next season for the Catamounts.
Accaoui (Ah-coo-we) is a 5-foot-10 guard who comes to Vermont from Lincoln, R.I. He led St. Andrews High School to a pair of New England Championships as he scored more than 1,600 career points and had his number retired. Accaoui was a two-time team captain who earned team MVP honors as a senior. He also was selected to the all-state team twice and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee.
“Joey is a great shooter who is capable of playing point or shooting guard,” said Lonergan. “He has a tremendous work ethic and will compete for playing time as a freshman. I think our fans will love watching Joey play since he is such a fierce competitor.”
Bergmann is a local product who played at Rice Memorial High School leading the Green Knights to the Vermont Division I State Championship at Patrick Gym this past season. At 6-foot-10 he was a force on both ends of the floor as a senior, averaging 21.8 points, 12.6 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game. The reigning Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year, Bergmann was a two-time all-state first team selection and a McDonald’s All-American nominee.
