BURLINGTON, Vt. – Former University of Vermont men’s basketball student-athlete Martin Klimes (Prague, Czech Rep.) will continue his career overseas as he recently signed to play professionally in Spain with Alcazar de San Juan. Alcazar is a second division team in Spain that plays 30-40 games a season starting this year on September 21 through March.
Klimes will look to gain exposure as he joins a veteran team that has seen recent success. Alcazar is located approximately 80 miles south of Madrid and plays in the eight-team EBA.
A two-time co-captain, Klimes was named to the America East All-Conference Third Team, All-Defensive Team and All-Academic Team this past season as he helped guide the Catamounts (25-8) to the America East Regular Season Championship and their first appearance in the postseason National Invitational Tournament.
Klimes passed David Hehn '05 for most career games played in Vermont history with 126, not missing a contest in his four years. He appeared in 33 contests last season and made 25 starts. He averaged 6.8 points per game and was second on the team with 4.6 rebounds per contest this season while shooting 58 percent from the floor and recording 23 blocks. Klimes came on strong over the second half of the season averaging 9.3 points per game over the final 15 contests and shot 66.7 percent in league games.
Klimes was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Team and the America East Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete in each of his last two seasons.
