The University of Vermont has suspended sophomore men's hockey forward Jonathan Higgins for six games for his involvement in an early Monday morning incident that led to court charges, UVM director of athletics Bob Corran said Friday.

Corran said the university also suspended sophomore defenseman Patrick Cullity for one game for an unspecified violation of the school's code of conduct for student-athletes.

In addition, Corran confirmed that UVM athletic officials and men's hockey coach Kevin Sneddon had reprimanded the team for unsuitable conduct by some team members at a downtown Burlington establishment that same night.

Chris Wojcik, UVM's assistant director of athletic communications, said Friday the players declined to comment.

Higgins was cited into Vermont District Court in Burlington on Tuesday for taking a bicycle without the owner's consent. He was stopped by Burlington police, issued a citation to appear in court and sent to detox at Act 1, according to an affidavit filed by officer David Clements.

Higgins entered a plea of not guilty. He is represented by Richard Goldsborough.

"Any time when we have information that student-athletes have behaved inappropriately, we take it seriously," said Corran on Friday afternoon. "One of the standards of our program is that we demand a great deal of our student-athletes in the classroom and as citizens.

"We appreciate the support we have from the community and part of that is to conduct ourselves as good citizens of the community."
